Human and Stone

October 2025 - April 2026

Rock climbing is often represented through images of exposure, risk, and elite performance. Here, it is examined not as spectacle, but as lived experience, shifting attention toward the quieter motivations that draw people to stone in the first place.
For many, climbing is not to set records or achieve notoriety, but rather to move in ways that feel both instinctive and unfamiliar at the same time, to visit new and exciting landscapes, build trust in a partner, navigate fear, and test the boundaries between comfort and growth. It becomes a form of both exercise and meditation, social ritual and solitude, play and discipline.
These photographs focus on the climber’s relationship with three interconnected elements: environment, community, and self. The rock face is not simply a backdrop but an active participant that shapes movement and attention. The community is built on mutual reliance and shared risk. The climber finds themself navigating strength, fatigue, doubt, and resolve.
Rather than emphasizing only the “summit” moment or the aesthetic of achievement, this work considers the spaces in between: the waiting, the attempt that falls short, the laughter at the base of a route. What does it mean to choose difficulty voluntarily? What draws individuals back to the same wall, the same crack, the same community?
By documenting everyday climbers - those pursuing challenge for personal reasons rather than public acclaim - this series asks broader questions about recreation, belonging, and human engagement with landscape. In an era when outdoor
culture is increasingly commodified and performance-driven, what remains at the core of why we climb?
The work does not aim to define climbing. Instead, it invites viewers to consider how movement on rock can become a site of connection: to place, to others, and to one’s evolving sense of capability.
